All supporters of the Newport String Project are welcome to come and celebrate the creative endeavors of the young students who are part of our free after-school youth mentoring programs. These joyful and festive events are free and open to the community.
Students will be performing classics like Twinkle Twinkle and Hunter's Chorus, alongside a piece about three large cats, a little gem called "The Infant Paganini" and even some original compositions!

Join the Newport String Quartet for our new Open Rehearsal series in Council Chambers at City Hall!
On the final Wednesday of each month (February-May), the Newport String Quartet will rehearse music from its signature concert series in Council Chambers between 11am and 1.30pm.
No RSVP required. Listeners are welcome to drop by for just a few minutes or to join us for the whole rehearsal.

Newport String Project’s annual fundraising concert at IYRS
June 1st, 5.30pm-7.30pm
This year’s theme “Musical Generations” honors the deep connections created between students and teachers through the language of music. The program will feature a performance by the Big Sky Orchestra alongside their mentors in the Newport String Quartet. The quartet will perform works by composers reflecting the extraordinary “family tree” of musicians connected across generations through their mentors and teachers.

Newport County Concert Series - I

The Guild Hall, St John’s Church, 61 Poplar St, Newport
This dynamic concert will feature two masterworks for string quartet – Haydn’s String Quartet op 17 no 4 in c minor and Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental String Quartet in f minor, op. 80 – alongside Imogen Holst’s atmospheric and rarely heard Phantasy Quartet, as well as Carlos Simon’s "Warmth of Other Suns" inspired by the Great Migration.
Newport County Concert Series - I

St Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave, Jamestown
This dynamic concert will feature two masterworks for string quartet – Haydn’s String Quartet op 17 no 4 in c minor and Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental String Quartet in f minor, op. 80 – alongside Imogen Holst’s atmospheric and rarely heard Phantasy Quartet, as well as Carlos Simon’s "Warmth of Other Suns" inspired by the Great Migration.

The Newport String Project continues its signature Newport County Concert Series on Saturday, December 7th , 2pm at Newport Art Museum.
The program opens with a lesser heard work from Haydn’s set of op. 50 Prussian quartets, the expansive String Quartet in C Major. The quartet will also perform Tom Morrison’s Sea Change (2018) - a musical evocation of Antarctica and meditation on the impact of climate change. Concertgoers will have the unique opportunity to experience Tom Morrison’s piece against the panoramic backdrop of KELSY PATNAUDE: AT SEA (with cole brauer) currently on view at the Newport Art Museum.
The centerpiece of the program is Dvořák’s monumental String Quartet in G Major op 106 – a piece overflowing with the joy of his return to his homeland following his stint in America.

The Newport String Project continues its signature Newport County Concert Series on Sunday December 8th 3pm at Four Corners Arts Center in Tiverton.
The program opens with a lesser heard work from Haydn’s set of op. 50 Prussian quartets, the expansive String Quartet in C Major. This concert coincides with Bright Night Weekend at the Four Corners Arts Center which will be hosting its 11th annual Re-Tree exhibit. Be sure to check out the festive showcase of re-Trees (imaginatively created by community members from upcycled materials) on the grounds surrounding the Meeting House as part of your concert experience.

Newport County Concert Series - III

The Newport String Project is delighted to return to the Jamestown Arts Center on Saturday February 8th at 3pm with an evocative afternoon of music for string quartet. The Newport String Quartet will perform works by Beethoven and Shostakovich alongside a set of contrasting and rarely heard works by three extraordinary court composers from the 17th century.
In celebration of the Jamestown Art Center's current exhibit, The Sun, the Newport String Quartet is delighted to feature Dobrinka Tabakova's The Smile of Flamboyant Wings inspired by Joan Miro's painting of the same name. The large red circle in Miro's work has often been interpreted as a sun-like presence and Tabakova brilliantly uses the sounds of the string quartet to convey radiant energy, warmth and light.

In partnership with Music at Trinity, the Newport String Project continues its signature Newport County Concert Series on Sunday, February 9th at 3pm at Trinity Church (Honyman Hall). This vibrant concert will feature the project’s resident ensemble, the Newport String Quartet, performing works by Purcell, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Jacquet de la Guerre, O’Carolan and Tabakova.
The program opens with a set of lesser known works by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Henry Purcell and Turlough O’Carolan – three contemporaries performing in the courts of Europe in the 1600s. Alongside, the quartet will perform two masterworks – Beethoven’s String Quartet in c minor, op. 18 no. 4 and Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 1. The program also includes Dobrinka Tabakova’s “The Smile of the Flamboyant Wings”.
Community Concert at Ochre Court

Join the Newport String Project for its much anticipated free annual community concert at Ochre Court at Salve Regina University on Sunday March 23rd at 3pm!
This not-to-be-missed concert, in one of Newport's most iconic settings, will feature music by Florence Price and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
The Newport String Quartet will be joined by up-and-coming NYC-based clarinetist Katia Waxman for a performance of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's extraordinary Clarinet Quintet.
